A true seeker of the emotional, intimate and personal aspects of the Internet and a militant striving to infuse this space with human warmth, Igor Stromajer is known as the author of a virtual base, called intima.org, which is welcoming and alluring, and yet non-lavish and non-seductive in its appearance. One of the most versatile artists on the Net, and the first cantor of HTML (Oppera Internettikka), Stromajer surprises us once again with the low-tech, minimalist trash-sound project, zvrst3, awarded 1st prize at Trash ART, Moscow, Russia, 1999.
In this work the artist continues to make room for the individual and to render complex ideas with simplicity. As many other net.artists, especially from the former Eastern Block, Stromajer is a non-believer in seamless expression. He exploits the aspect of transparency of the Internet medium to the maximum in order to convey a healing message and sow a liberating seed. Therefore, the trick and the manipulation in the work are made so obvious: the sentence, "Don't ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!" which John F. Kennedy pronounced fourty years ago (January 20, 1961) on his inauguration as President, has been edited and reversed to - Don't ask what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you!"
In an interview with by Tilman Baumgaertel, published in Telepolis (Germany, April 1999), Igor Stromajer says: "Being faced with the computer is like going to the very deep process of the most intensive self-communication. It is a kind of art that puts you as a user/participant into the co-creators position: you have to be active to survive in this kind of digital environment." In these respects, zvrst3 is a manifestation of the syntax of "self-communication" enabling the individual to turn a powerful, imperative sentence into a question or even more precisely into many question marks. This is how an empty space is created in which human identity can dwell and being can unfold. As the artist says, "this is space democracy." In zvrst 3 (zvrst means species in Slovenian) he encrypts the beginnings of the democratic experience in our civilization as Aristotle's sentence "Man is a political animal" and Socrates' "Know thyself" carved into the Delphi oracle come to mind and blend into each other.
The artist transforms the computer box into a dwelling of the human inner voice. He goes further than simply reversing the sentence by multiplying it and giving the opportunity to the viewer to replay them in different order. The statement goes out of control. From very small series of gestures performed both by the artist and the viewer, the deconstruction grows into monumental (better yet poly-mental) proportions. The voice of a leader breaks into many voices and his words splinter into many sounds. Then, comes the silence... The multiple silent cells on the screen constitute the magnified greed of the microphone conspicuously handed to the person in front of the computer. It is our turn to speak. The multiplicity of echoes and other sound effects, that the listner co-creates, reverberate and penetrate the viewer on a subliminal, almost organic level. The message instills an inner revolution, becomes healing, empowering life.
From a post-communist point of view, the artist, who belongs to a generation that has lived the traumatic effects of totalitarian thought and practice shows that imperatives could easily be taken to the absolute and turn into dogmas. Perhaps with zvrst.3, Igor Stromajer has the grand task of preparing the individual for a life in a community capable of reaching a higher level of democracy, yet unknown, and co-creating a 3rd millennium democracy. Or is it simply the distant voices of a species of a third kind that the Net has accidentally caught and brought down to us?

En véritable chercheur des aspects émotifs, intimes et personnels de l'Internet, et militant pour l'inclusion de la chaleur humaine dans cet espace, Igor Stromajer est connu comme le créateur d'une base virtuelle intitulée intima.org, qui se veut accueillante et attrayante, et pourtant retenue et sobre en apparence. Un des artistes les plus versatiles sur le Web, et le premier chantre de HTML (Oppera Internettikka), Stromajer nous surprend encore une fois avec son projet sonore low-tech, minimaliste "trash ", zvrst3, qui a obtenu le premier prix a la compétition Trash ART de Moscou (Russie) en 1999. Dans cette oeuvre, l'artiste persiste a créer un lieu destiné a l'individu et a aborder des idées complexes dans la simplicité. Comme plusieurs autres net.artistes, tout particulierement de l'ex-Bloc de l'Est, Stomajer ne s'intéresse pas a l'expression désincarnée et exploite la transparence du médium Internet au maximum de façon a transmettre un message salutaire et a offrir un germe libérateur. A partir de la, le dispositif mis en place et la manipulation effectuée deviennent tres évidentes : la phrase " ne demandez pas ce que votre pays peut faire pour vous, demandez-vous ce que vous pouvez faire pour votre pays " prononcée par John F. Kennedy il y a quarante ans (20 juillet, 1961) lors de l'inauguration de sa présidence, a été renversée pour devenir : Ne demandez pas ce que vous pouvez faire pour votre pays, demandez ce que votre pays peut faire pour vous!
Dans une entrevue dirigée par Tilman Baumgartel publiée dans Telepolis (Allemagne, avril 1999), Igor Stromajer affirmait : " L'expérience de faire face a l'ordinateur est analogue a une expérience profonde et intensive de communication avec soi. Ce type d'art projette l'utilisateur/participant dans une position de co-créateurs : vous devez etre actif pour survivre dans ce genre d'environnement numérique. " En cela, zvrst3 manifeste la syntaxe de l'auto-communication en permettant a l'individu de renverser une phrase puissante et impérative en une question, ou pour etre plus précis, en plusieurs points d'interrogation. C'est ainsi qu'un espace vide est créé dans lequel l'identité humaine peut demeurer et l'etre peut se découvrir. Comme le dit l'artiste, "c'est l'espace de la démocratie." Avec zvrst3 (zvrst signifie "especes" en slovene), il pointe du doigt les débuts de l'expérience démocratique dans notre civilisation. L'énoncé d'Aristote "l'homme est un animal politique" et celui de Socrate "connais-toi toi-meme" gravé dans l'oracle de Delphes viennent a l'esprit et se melent ici l'un a l'autre.
L'artiste transforme la boîte de l'ordinateur en un lieu de résidence pour la voix humaine intérieure. Il va encore plus loin en multipliant cette voix et en donnant la possibilité au visiteur de l'entendre dans des ordres différents. La phrase devient ainsi hors de contrôle. A partir de tres peu de gestes opérés par l'artiste et le visiteur, la déconstruction prend des proportions monumentales (ou mieux poly-mentales). La voix du dirigeant se fragmente en plusieurs voix et ses mots éclatent en morceaux. Puis, le silence... La multiplicité des échos et autres effets sonores co-créés par le récepteur, réverbere et pénetre le visiteur a un niveau subliminal presque organique. Le message insuffle une révolution intérieure, bénéfique, puissante. D'un point de vue post-communiste, l'artiste, qui appartient a une génération ayant vécu les effets traumatiques de la pensée et de la pratique totalitaires, montre que ces impératifs pourraient facilement etre perçus comme des absolus et se transformer en dogmes. Peut-etre bien qu'avec zvrst.3, Igor Stromajer s'est mis en oeuvre de préparer l'individu a une vie au sein d'une communauté apte a atteindre un plus haut niveau de démocratie, encore inconnu, en co-créant la démocratie du 3e millénaire ou alors s'agit-il simplement des voix distantes d'une espece du troisieme type que le Web aurait attrapé accidentellement et apporté jusqu'a nous?
